The brain is an amazing thing. We, and when I say we I mean scientists don’t really know how it works. They don’t know the reason that humans have, and most other animals almost certainly do not have self-consciousness.

Likewise, the brain can regenerate itself after an accident, trauma or illness to its plasticity. However, perhaps the most amazing thing about the brain is that gaming may be good for it, so you needn’t feel guilty about plugging in your PlayStation.

Research into the brain has found that playing video games can have a positive impact on the brain in a number of ways. First of all, it can improve your spatial awareness, through strengthening these areas of your brain.

Next, gaming can improve your planning skills, which is self-evident if you have ever played certain games, such as Zelda. As well as this, gaming can help you to develop your working memory, and help to reduce the effects of trauma and pain if you have had an accident.

Obviously, we are not claiming that plugging in your console will make you into some sort of Albert Einstein. However, empirical data has shown that gaming can improve your cognition in a surprising variety of ways, despite the bad press that video games often get.

To learn more about the surprisingly positive effects that gaming can have on your cognitive health, see the infographic produced by Computer Planet.
